Orthodontics for Children
Dr. Schur prefers to see children at age 7, or sooner if the parent or dentist has concerns. This provides an opportunity for early assessment, which leaves more treatment options available. This also allows ample time to address growth issues, habits, and developing bite problems. When interceptive treatment is not needed, parents enjoy the opportunity to discuss concerns about potential needs as their child develops. This also opens the door for the child's dentist and orthodontist to work as a team in looking after your child's developing bite. It is important to recognize that all children are unique, so treatment will tailored to individual needs.
Orthodontics for Adults
Close to half of Dr. Schur's patients are adults. Healthy teeth can be moved throughout life. Typical reasons for adult orthodontic treatment include longstanding esthetic (cosmetic) issues, advanced dental wear, jaw joint or TMJ issues, bite shifting over time, and repositioning needs before your dentist can place crowns, bridges, or implants. An improper bite can also contribute to gum and bone loss in cases of periodontal (gum) disease. Braces are no longer the "railroad tracks" of yesteryear. During your initial exam visit you can see the cosmetically acceptable options that are now available, including Invisalign®. Proper adult orthodontic treatment requires a team approach, involving Dr. Schur, your dentist, hygienist, and often other dental specialists.
