Orthodontics

What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of irregularities in the alignment and function of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment can be interceptive, which means addressing a developing problem in a child who has all or some primary (baby) teeth. It can be definitive, meaning correction of problems in the adult bite, typically after the age of 12. Treatment can be limited, addressing only certain teeth, or comprehensive in scope. Orthodontists can use fixed appliances (cemented, as in braces), removable appliances, or a combination of both. Retainers are removable or fixed appliances that maintain alignment. Invisalign® is another example of a removable appliance.

How early should my child be seen?
Dr. Schur prefers to see children at age 7, or sooner if the parent or dentist has concerns. This provides an opportunity for early assessment, which leaves more treatment options available. This also allows ample time to address growth issues and developing bite problems. When interceptive treatment is not needed, parents enjoy the opportunity to discuss concerns about potential needs as their child develops. This also opens the door for the child's dentist and orthodontist to work as a team in looking after your child's developing bite. It is important to recognize that all children are unique, so treatment will tailored to their individual needs.

Adult orthodontics
Close to one half of Dr. Schur's patients are adults. Healthy teeth can be moved throughout life. Typical reasons for adult orthodontic treatment include longstanding esthetic (cosmetic) issues, advanced dental wear due to improper bite, jaw joint or TMJ issues, bite shifting over time, and repositioning needs before your dentist can place crowns, bridges, or implants. An improper bite can also contribute to gum and bone loss in cases of periodontal (gum) disease. Braces are no longer the "railroad tracks" of yesteryear. During your initial exam visit you can see the cosmetically-acceptable options that are now available, including Invisalign®. Proper adult orthodontic treatment requires a team approach, involving Dr. Schur, your dentist, hygienist, and often other dental specialists.

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
The initial exam visit allows you and Dr. Schur to discuss your particular desires and concerns. Actual planning of treatment involves evaluation of photographs, x-rays, and models of your teeth. Dr. Schur may meet with your dentist and other specialists to plan and coordinate treatment. Finally, all of the information and input will be brought together when you meet with Dr. Schur during your pre-treatment consultation.
