Do These Things To Optimize your Invisalign Treatment

Jan 20 • 2 minute read

1. Wear Your Aligners At Least 22 Hours Per Day

This is the big one—think of it as the golden rule! Your aligners need to stay in your mouth for about 22 hours every single day to apply that gentle, consistent pressure that shifts your teeth where they need to go.

Only pop them out for:

  • Eating meals
  • Drinking anything besides water
  • Brushing and flossing

That leaves plenty of time for sleeping (which counts toward your hours—yay!), working, hanging out, and just living life. The more consistently you hit that 22-hour mark, the less likely you'll run into delays or need extra refinements. Pro tip: Plan your meals and snacks to minimize removals, and set a gentle phone reminder if you ever forget to pop them back in after brushing. You've got this!

2. Switch to Your New Aligners Exactly as Prescribed

Your orthodontist designs each set to move your teeth a little bit at a time, so timing is everything. Whether it's every 7 days, 10 days, or 2 weeks (depending on your plan), change them on schedule—don't jump ahead or linger too long on one set.

Sticking to the intervals keeps your progress on track and helps avoid issues like poor tracking (when a tooth doesn't move quite right). If something feels off with a new set, chat with your ortho—they're there to help tweak things!

3. Give Those Chewies a Try (If Your Ortho Recommends Them)

Chewies (those soft, squishy little cylinders that come with your aligners) are like a mini workout for your trays! They help seat your aligners snugly against your teeth by closing any tiny air gaps, which means better pressure and more effective movement.

How to use them:

  • Pop your aligners in.
  • Place a chewie between your teeth.
  • Gently bite down and chew/move it around your mouth for a few minutes (many folks aim for 5–10 minutes, a couple times a day—especially right after inserting a new set or when you notice a looser fit).
  • Rinse them with lukewarm water after use and store them clean.

Not everyone needs them every day, but using them as prescribed can make your aligners feel more comfortable and help speed things along. If your ortho gave you some, they're handing you a little boost—take it!

4. Regarding Safety: Stick to Flat Water When Your Aligners Are In

When your aligners are happily in place, the only drink you should have is plain, flat water. Anything else (soda, coffee, tea, juice, wine, even sparkling water) can stain your aligners, trap sugars/acids underneath, or cause issues.

Water is safe because it rinses away bits of food and keeps things clean without any risk. If you're thirsty for something flavored, take your aligners out, enjoy your drink, rinse your mouth (and trays if needed), then pop them back in. Simple habit, big payoff for keeping your aligners crystal clear and your treatment on point!

You're doing awesome just by being proactive about your Invisalign care. Small, consistent steps like these really add up—they help you finish treatment on time (or even a bit early!), with fewer hiccups and a smile you're proud to show off.

Keep in close touch with your orthodontist, attend those check-ins, and celebrate the little wins along the way. You've got an exciting transformation ahead—stay consistent, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the process. Your dream smile is closer than you think!
